A CEO used the term “cultural arsonists” when describing dysfunctional behavior in a company.

It got my attention. I hope it gets yours.

For me, a cultural arsonist is someone who is working in a way that is destructive to the aspirational aspects of the culture.

Degrading culture can destroy teams, kill productivity, and distract people from the mission.

Cultural arsonists need to correct their behavior immediately or be moved to a new company. The risks are too high.

You know what excellent behavior looks like for your organization. It should be a direct reflection of your plainly worded values and mission. Anything at odds with that is a problem and needs to be called out.

If you cannot or will not, you might as well be handing out the matches and gasoline.
