With over 10 years’ experience working with 1000s of leaders and teams, I know what works and what doesn’t work to improve leadership.
I know how to build teams without wasting time and guesswork. There are proven ways to structure programs, training, and coaching that will make them very effective.
But there is another piece to the puzzle to leadership development that doesn’t get talked about enough.
I call it the X Factor.
The X Factor is you, the leader of the leaders.
One reason a lot of leadership training doesn’t work is because people approach it as a box to check or a task to complete.
It doesn’t work that way. Leadership development is personal development. Most people are not waking up every day saying they want to be exceptional. Some do. Many do not.
That’s where you come in. Your people are watching you. They watch the standards and examples you set. They notice if you show you care about improving yourself. They notice if you have a passion for excellence.
If they see that you are only mildly or theoretically interested in changing, it’s likely they will be too.
If you want people to change and improve, you must change and improve. People prefer to see a sermon to hearing one.
You want your team to constantly improve. Good. Show them how much.
Show them by going public with your goals to improve as a leader. Then ask for their help. Tell them to be on the lookout for when you are doing well and when you could do better.
That tells people you are serious about change. It tells people you are more than just words. And it tells people that they can and should change too.
