Children and dogs give us the gift of reminders about being excited in the moment. Children can literally roll on the ground with joy about some great gift at Christmas. They can get their elbows up to really dig in to get a giant scoop of ice cream into their bowl. My dog, Candy, literally jumps for joy at the prospect of a walk. Her pupils go to full dilation when I ask if she wants a cookie. Dogs and children seem to get it. And maybe one of their highest purposes is to make sure we (our worried, irritated, impatient, jaded adult selves) do not forget to be enthused about where we are, what we are doing, and who we are with.
Get in There
