Vulnerability is a popular buzzword in leadership circles. Being vulnerable is presented as a choice, but the truth is that leaders are already vulnerable in the sense that people already know their leader is not perfect and likely does not have all the answers. Is it news to anyone that leaders are vulnerable to criticism, second-guessing, and blame? The choice then is what to do about it. Will the leader learn, apply, or integrate new perspectives? Will they accept new information, if relevant? Will they actively pursue their own development? …Or will the leader just try and patch the new vulnerability like Microsoft’s endless patches on all its software?

Being vulnerable really isn’t a choice. What we do with what the world tells us IS a choice.
