I was at a conference recently and one of the speakers asked the audience to shout out what they want.

The answers were predictable:

  • More money!
  • More deals!
  • More freedom!
  • More time with family!

Then he asked, “And what is the goal behind your goals?”

Hmmm. Good question. Let’s think about that.

Everybody wants something, but it’s important to know the deeper motivations for that thing that you want.

Because when a person peels back the onion and looks deeper at their goals, they can get to some very powerful and profound motivations.

These might include:

  • Because I want to reach my full potential.
  • Because I want to prove to others I can do it.
  • Because I don’t want to let my family down.
  • Because I want to leave a legacy.
  • Because I want to have an impact.
  • Because I want to set the example.
  • Because I want to be proud of who I am.
  • Because I want to enjoy all the good things that the world has to offer in the time allotted me.
  • Because I want to be in a position to help others.

So, what do you want… and why do you want it?

When you clarify the goal behind your goals, you will find new levels of creativity, commitment and focus. These will help you be a better individual contributor PLUS you will be a better member of the team. Because now you know (really know) why you are here.
